We begin by plotting ( -3, 9 ) as follows:
-3 in the x direction means... ...three units to the left, +9 in the y direction means... ... 9 units upward, when we follow these two sets of instructions we achieve a location which we will mark with a point as shown in the picture... We notice here that 9 units exceeds my axis graduated scale...this is the right time to split each unit on the vertical axis in half. NOTE: We could leave the horizontal axis unchanged since the largest input values will fit on the present graduated "x-axis" scale... ...but for symmetry purposes we will split the "x-axis" values also. |
