Your assignment will be to create, in your engineering notebook, a series of sketched illustrations of the various solid objects shown in the slide show below, along with the necessary formula and calculations to accomplish the exercise as it shall be explained below.
You will use the dial calipers to determine all of the necessary measurements needed for each shape to acquire the surface area and volume. That information may require Height, Depth, Width, diameter, radius, area of the base of the object, etc...
Use the formula sheet to assist you with your calculations. Notice that when you see a CAPITAL letter in the formula it represents an AREA...not just a linear dimension...so be careful as you calculate. The sheet has more details about expectations of performance and outcomes listed on it so please read through the whole thing before you begin. Do your best and neatest work. This goes into your engineering notebook...which is a permanent record of your process.
This exploration and documentation should include the following:
Brainstorm and Explore Various Geometric Solids
Document Ideas for Future Consideration
Experiment with Using Calipers and Reading Them Accurately
Create Rough Sketch of Shapes to Record Measurement Data
Create Preliminary Data Analysis Sheet with Appropriate Formulas
Refine Thoughts About Approach, Roles and Outcomes
Cooperatively Form Your Group's Documentation Statements
Create an Individual Artfifact for Teacher Review
Create A Common Artifact for Formal Presentation and Peer Review
Consider Peer Findings and Feedback to Self Assess Your Artifact
Create Personal Web Portfolio Entry
...Then Brainstorm Together in Class Webpage Discussion Post
A gallery walk of each groups rough sketches and preliminary data should be done, followed by a group discussion about the various findings and the implication of such. After reflection and group analysis, construct a final presentation including your annotated drawings, all formulas used, and your final calculations with boxed solutions for your class and teacher. Your artifact shall be within, or include, a PowerPoint presentation of no less that 5 slides and no more than 15. Your presentation should address all factors considered and how looking at the other groups work may have affected your final analysis.
All PowerPoint presentations should be of professional and conservative business or scientific format. These shall then be posted on an ongoing web based class project site and each persons personal web portfolio for display on the internet. All pages and portfolios shall conform to internet safety standards and acceptable language and content policies.
A formal peer review shall be done as a discussion post on the class webpage and shall be completed appropriate to said venue with regard to commentary, language and content. This review/reflection is to be a graded activity of self and peer assessment skills.
